I have had a lot of fun times in 2017 at MPPS including camps, excursions, lessons and even more. The most memorable thing about school was the camps because they helped us get to know each other while being away from home and doing some fun activities.
My most recent camp cape bridgewater was my favourite because we had a range of activities such as archery, abseiling, caving and sandboarding-they were my favourite. Also my cabin was giant. I was convinced we nearly had the whole year 6 boy cohort in it. Apart from not getting much sleep I enjoyed the jokes exchanged all day. LITERALLY ALL DAY! Other camps I went on were fun but this one in particular stood out for me.
I also enjoyed the buddies excursion. Despite the obvious responsibility of keeping my buddy out of the lake it was good to spend some time with my buddy to celebrate our year together. I hope He had as much fun with me this year as I did with him. I wish him well in the rest of his schooling.
Another memorable excursion was the Public Transport Challenge. This year my team was all boys with only 2 year 5’s. Last year we were only year 5’s so we had no experience with this kind of challenge at all. Despite being rushed at the end and other small issues we came tied 2nd! This year we had lots of time and a plan-to go to the furthest place first and then come back passing the closer places and end up back at school. This plan worked and we got back to school half an hour early. The suspense haunted us all week but eventually we were told the results. Fortunately our team came FIRST!
In Integrated Studies we learnt about animal adaptations. For our project we made a powerpoint, diagram, diorama and an experiment all about how a certain animal (mine was the barking spider) adapts to its environment in order to survive. This project was interesting but it felt quite long and was hard to keep engaged in all the time. We presented these to our class and just showed them to the rest of the 5/6’s.
This year has been a great year to end off my primary school years. I feel I’m ready for high school with all the preparation primary school has given me. I wish my fellow graduates well at high school and hope we all do well in the future.
Farewell primary school!
I found it interesting when Rowan said that Charles is Laurie’s imaginary friend because Charles was very naughty and maybe that reflected that Laurie was naughty as well. It might be that all the things that Laurie said Charles did Laurie did. This could mean Laurie came up with an imaginary friend that had traits like himself.
I found it interesting when Emma said the dad and Laurie were the main characters because I thought it was written from the mum’s point of view therefore she was the main character as well as Laurie. The dad was also concerned for Laurie and Charles’ influence but I think the mum delved deeper into the situation because she was the one who went to the P.T.A meeting and investigated.
I found it interesting when Tara said Laurie lied to his parents because he didn’t fit in at school and wanted to look cool by having Charles as a cool story to bring home to his parents. This view made me think about other things in Laurie’s life that he could have lied about to be cool.
I read a story called Charles to make this reflection:
- I think the author made Laurie act slightly ruder after his first day at school to say that when you start school you are at a different stage in life where you are older and not mature yet but not a sweet little kid anymore. I think it’s debatable whether Laurie or the mum is the main character because Laurie is the one who it is focussed on but it’s written from the mum’s point of view. Laurie acts a bit rude. He goes to school for the first time and that’s how he gets to be this way. The mum is a worried sort of mum who isn’t sure about her son going to school and the influences he might get.
- In this story the mum wants to relax about her son going to school. She wants to make sure that he is getting something out of school and enjoying it rather than not learning and dreading going to school. I think Laurie wants to have fun at school and make friends but isn’t into the learning so much and the stories he brought home to his parents about Charles were just made up to maybe make him feel better about his own behaviour at school.
- In the end the mum finds out that Charles is a made up student and Laurie has been making up stories about a naughty kid in his class. I think she found out that not everything Laurie says about school is true and if she isn’t there to see and witness everything that goes on at school she can never be too sure. Laurie ends up getting caught and found out about his false stories about Charles but, as his teacher told his parents, he took a week or so to settle in but he soon adjusted to the school’s environment.
- At the start, the mum wasn’t too sure about what was going on at school but she believed Laurie’s stories about Charles and how he got punished but at the time she didn’t know he was making it up. At the end of the story she found out, via the teacher, that Charles wasn’t real and Laurie had being lying to her. She has now learned not to be too trusting about every story or piece of information about school her son tells her. This story has a message about parents who don’t completely know what’s going on when they’re not there and how their child can bend the truth or change it completely. In this case it was about a school boy and his mum wondering about the things he’s telling her about school.
- This author creates an atmosphere of an average school boy and his mother. The author also included the father being the less worrying parent and less of a main character. He doesn’t delve as deep into the situation as the mum does when she investigates at the P.T.A meeting. I think this is because he didn’t go to the meeting and he didn’t listen to as many of the Charles stories as the mum did. I think maybe the school has a bit of a bad influence on Laurie because after his first day of school he had a ruder attitude towards his family. This is a world where the schools have physical punishments such as spanking as well as normal school punishments.
I read a story called Joseph Bryant to make this reflection:
- This story helps me understand the concept of experiencing grief when you are young and someone close to you dies. The main themes in this story are loss, grief and love. These concepts are expressed in the story when she explained how she reacted to the news, it took a second, I remember, for everything to set in. I would be losing my best friend and I didn’t know how to respond. I was angry and upset and so confused; what did Joseph ever do to deserve this?
- The author wants the reader to read the story and then think about how she dealt with the feelings she had about Joseph dying. She obviously had a very close relationship with him and since she was young this story has a message about grief and how you can feel when you experience loss. In this story it shows her confusion when it said, being so young, I was intrigued by someone who was so sick, but managed to try and stay the same person. Joseph did everything he could do to hide his struggling from really having a hard time, the nurses warned us that Joseph might not be getting better and the hospital was only able to do so much to help him.
- People who have experienced someone close to them dying or who has lost anything important might benefit from this story and the message it conveys. Some examples might be someone with a disability who can’t use a certain body part, someone who’s lost a sense like sight or hearing. Some parts of the story show a message of love when it said, he fought against his disease every single day. Maybe that’s why I loved him; he knew things were not going to get better, yet he still tried.
- When she congratulated Joseph after hearing he had cancer this had a meaning that told the reader how being young affected her reaction. It meant that she was only in grade 3 at the time and she didn’t really understand cancer until he died. Also how Joseph taught her the true meaning of love had a meaning that was that when she lost him it really impacted her and helped her understand how much and why she loved him.
- Something repeated in this story is how Joseph taught her the true meaning of love. This is stated at the start and at the end to give it an important meaning and emphasis. This means the author wanted us to know how she was feeling and understand the message in the story. She also at the start talked about how the word ‘love’ is a misused word and how few people know what it really means.
- The author is saying that love is a complicated concept and that this certain scenario is a way that someone could learn and experience the true meaning of it. It is also about the grief and loss that she felt. The way the author conveyed this was by using someone’s death as an example. I think the message in this story is you don’t know how much you love someone until you lose them. The themes to support this message are love and loss.

Ideas: The ideas in this story are that there is a strange girl who gets sicker and sicker right from when she is born and it’s about how she copes trying to live a normal life. The heart of this piece is the relationship between mother and daughter and how, in the end they both discover their family traditions and unique ways of eating, sleeping and having fun. The main idea of the story also left the reader thinking about something.
Organisation: This story uses leads such as from the start, the mother wants her daughter to be a normal girl and in the end you find out she wanted that so that she could live an easier life in that world. The author uses the exoticness of the character to pull the reader in and make them want to read and find out more. The ending of the piece really summed up the whole idea of the story and completed it to make it feel finished.
Voice: This piece has a certain style and personality that makes it unique and interesting to read. The author really explored the sadness and emotions of the characters to give the piece a specific feeling. This style of writing was a kind of fiction that played with realism and also gave it a funny element. The creativity of this piece showed how the author interpreted that certain idea.
Word Choice: This piece had a lot of exclamation coming from the main character which showed the mood of that character. Sometimes the author used adjectives that showed the character’s frustration or sadness. One of the most significant things in this story was the description of the “hugest mop of wiry black hair” that gave the whole character a kind of personality and meaning. The meaning of the mop of wiry black hair was to give her some sort of hiding place and something to obscure her when she was cross.
Sentence Fluency: The sentences in this piece were fairly simple in terms of the tier 2 language but the author used bit of repetition to show similarity in the piece and give important parts an emphasis. The structure of sentences wasn’t too long and the adjectives fitted well in the context. Quite a few times the main character would shout or growl and this gave the piece a range of calm moments and also tense moments.
Conventions: The spelling, punctuation and grammar were fine in this piece and it was interesting how the author used exclamation marks to give a specific part more meaning such as excitement or anger. The writing in this piece was quite easy to read but had a certain level of difficulty so that it wasn’t boring and it was well written.

Predict: I predict this story is about someone’s eleventh birthday because, from the title and 1st paragraph the character is talking about getting older. Specifically turning eleven like when she said “And you don’t feel eleven at all. You feel like you’re still ten. And you are–underneath the year that makes you eleven.”
Questions: Why does she wish she was 102 because she would have less life left? Why was she so sad about the sweater when she could have just said it wasn’t hers in the first place? Why is Mrs. Price so mean about Rachel putting the sweater on?
Infer: I inferred that the character was a girl because Sylvia said it was Rachel’s and so Mrs. Price gave it to the main character (Rachel). I also infer that Mrs. Price didn’t react to Phyllis claiming the sweater because she didn’t want to admit she was wrong.
Connect: I connect with Rachel when she said that you don’t feel a difference when you turn eleven and it takes time to feel older. She said “Or maybe some days you might need to sit on your mama’s lap because you’re scared, and that’s the part of you that’s five. And maybe one day when you’re all grown up maybe you will need to cry like if you’re three, and that’s okay.”
Feel: This story makes me feel a bit sad for Rachel because she is having a bad day on her birthday and she can’t build up the courage to point out that the red sweater isn’t hers. I also think Sylvia feels quite happy with herself for lying about whose sweater it was to be mean to Rachel.
Evaluate: What pulled me in this story was Rachel’s insight on turning eleven in the 1st paragraph. I thought it was interesting and similar to my own opinion. Some particular parts of the story lost me and some parts sounded a bit repetitive.
My partner and I created a project on the Barking Spider, an animal that lives in mulga country and makes a distinctive whistling or hissing sound to scare away predators. This project was assigned to us to focus on the key adaptations of an animal or plant that helps it survive and thrive in its desert environment. I think we worked well together and one of the key things we achieved was the confidence and understanding of the information we researched about the animal. I think our model and diagram both showed the key adaptations of the spider as well. We mainly achieved the 3rd column and some of the 2nd column in the rubric.
Some facts I found interesting during this project were:
- That the female barking spider can live for 20-30 years, way more than the male that only lives for 5-8 years and usually dies after mating
- They produce oil from a special gland to assist them when they use their brush feet to climb up slopes, this adaptation is a suction cup ability
- They have no teeth to chew food therefore they use their venom to liquefy their prey and then suck it up
I also have a couple of understandings from the topic:
- I now understand that barking spiders’ palps are structural adaptations as they use them to make a whistling sound that deters predators and this helps them survive (this is part of the Science Knowledge Victorian Curriculum Standards)
- We tested the barking spider’s suction cup ability by putting different amounts of oil onto suction cups and now I understand that the more oil used, the better the suction cup ability therefore they can climb up slopes easier (this is part of the Science Inquiry Skills Victorian Curriculum Standards)
A wondering I have is:
- How many glands do barking spiders have for producing their oil
The most important things I have learnt during this unit were:
How plants or animals can have adaptations to protect themselves from the temperature and conditions of their environment or to protect themselves from predators or other animals. I learnt this by researching about my assigned animal (The Barking Spider) and discovering how it’s changed/adapted to survive and thrive. I’ll use this knowledge to go further with this topic and develop more questions and wonderings to investigate about adaptations.
I also learnt, during the project how to share the roles between my partner and I to use the key strengths we each have as an advantage. I learnt this by consulting with my partner and also experimenting with the different elements of the project such as the diagram and model which I mainly worked on with help from my partner and the power point information and experiment ideas which my partner mostly did with my help. I am going to use my strengths in other tasks and project to bring my skills and experience to it. (This is part of Personal and Social Capabilities Victorian Curriculum Standards)
To conclude, over this whole unit I have learnt about the changes animals and plants make to their body in order to survive and thrive in their habitat whether it was and extreme environment like Antarctica or the desert. We also had an excursion to the Aquarium where we explored extreme environments as well as other animal habitats such as the ocean, the coral reef, rock pools and rainforests.
Next time I work in a group I could try to work on communicating with my group members more and check in with them to monitor each other’s progress.
My name is Charlie and I’m in year 6 this year. I like sport and music. My whole family plays music and loves listening to it too. I’ve played the piano for 4 or 5 years now and most of my inspiration comes from my eldest brother who also plays the piano. I don’t think I’ll ever be as good as him but its something to aim for. I also started playing the trombone at school 3 years ago. Music isn’t just fun to play its good for your brain too. Although 2 instruments is hard to handle since I play sport as well I somehow manage.
My week is jam packed since I’ve moved to a new soccer club. We train Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I have a match on every Sunday as well. Like that isn’t enough! I also play cricket! Cricket trainings are on Tuesdays and there is a match on Saturday. You might think my Thursdays are free but no! I have my piano lessons on Thursday. So my week is full but I still find time to relax (I probably should read more in that time though).
My soccer club is in the NPL (National Premier League) so its more professional than I used to play. I think my coaches are great and always looking to improve us as professional players individually and together as a team. My family has been with the same cricket club for a while and my brothers used to play there. Now I’m the only one left playing sport in my family but I still love it! I’m a fast bowler and I’m always aggressive when I’m playing no matter what the conditions. I look to get better not just with my bowling but with my batting. Soccer is a fast-paced game whereas cricket is more of a strategic game. I like having a mix of them.
In the future I want to go to Italy and France. I learn Italian and have developed a love for their culture. France is another place that would be interesting and there must be so much to see! My main goal is to go to the Eiffel tower in France and the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy. I think after my brother has finished high school we might go on an overseas trip because I’ve never been overseas! (Unless you count Tasmania).
In the future career-wise I want to be a musician or a cricketer. Recently I have been reading an autobiography about Mitchell Johnson who is one of my favourite cricketers! His views on the way cricket is played and his life story are very interesting and inspirational. Both of my brothers play music in bands and my eldest is in University studying music while my other brother is still in high school.
I have 3 pets at the moment. I have a very cute cat called Sophie. I also have two little fish named Leo and Curtis. I used to have fish but I’ve just recently started up the tank again.
This is my last year in primary school so I’m looking forward to a great last year and I can’t wait to go to high school!

Synopsis of Coding Session:
This session was part of the Hour of Code and it was just getting started on the subject of coding to familiarise ourselves with it and have a go. Coding is and efficient way of programming a computer to direct it and tell it what to do. I wasn’t there for the whole session but I still learnt about it and experienced trial and error when having a go at the activities. I had a go at bomberbot using directions to move the robot. This gave us a little taste of it and it was just one step to learning fully how to code. We also gave directions to our partners to experience the problems and we learnt you have to be specific when telling the computer what to do. Another thing we learnt about was debugging and coming across errors when coding.
What do I want to learn more about?
I want to learn more about how to cope with bugs and problems when coding because it’s easy to get stuck. Debugging was something we covered in the session but I want to expand and understand it better.
What confuses or excites me?
I’m confused about the purpose of coding and how it will be helpful in the future. Another thing that’s confusing is that I have to think of it from the computers perspective. Something that excites me is that coding is a very broad subject and you can be creative but it’s still efficient.
How can we improve learning about coding at MPPS?
I think we could incorporate our coding into our learning of our integrated topic once or twice a week and if students want an extension they can attend a lunchtime club that teaches students more about coding and gives them practise and scenarios where they have to use coding.
